Letter of Motivation Building Technology Aalto University, Finalnd
Dear Admissions Committee,
I am writing to express my strong motivation to
join the master’s Program in Building Technology at Aalto University. Though, I completed Bachelor of Engineering in
Electronic from N.E.D university of Engineering and Technology, Karachi,
Pakistan. but later throughout my professional journey, I have
cultivated a deep interest in sustainable and environment friendly construction
practices. I intend to pursue my
higher study in a renowned Institute abroad and Aalto University is one of such
Institute that ensures the high standard of education.
During my undergraduate studies, I have studied
courses like Engineering mechanics and Applied Thermodynamics, that gave me reasonable
understanding to work at an HVAC company, Iceberg Industries, dealer of LG
chillers in Pakistan. During my tenure, I had the opportunity to involve in commercial
projects such as GlaxoSmithKline, Engro foods and Atlas Honda among many, for
installation of Chillers and Cooling Tower, from pre-design phase to
commissioning and in many projects I and my team were also involved in
maintenance of HVAC throughout the year. These experiences honed my analytical
and problem-solving skills and instill in me the interest for designing
energy-efficient buildings or researching advanced construction materials to
address contemporary challenges in the built environment.
In some of the projects while working in HVAC
industry, one of the pressing issues we faced after few years of installation,
was indoor air quality. Continuous use of Air Conditioners, impact health of
inhabitants. The reason for this is not only dust accumulation in filters or
ducts but also Volatile organic compound (VOC). And the main source of VOC are
chemicals used in variety of products used indoors for example paints, refrigerants,
building materials and furnishings. Such issues always intrigued me to study
and research about use of safe and environment friendly materials. Since Europe
is committed to sustainability, circular economy and aims to be climate-neutral
and Finland is no exception in contributing to the development of resilient and
eco-friendly infrastructure. That’s why I selected this program Master of
Science in Building Technology and I am particularly interested to specialize
in Building performance. Besides internationalization at Aalto university, collaboration
with industry, will provide me with the tools and knowledge to excel in this
field.
After spending few years at Iceberg Industries,
due to my personal commitment to home making and moving to another country
because of my spouse’s job, I couldn’t continue my professional job. Since back
then in Saudi Arabia, the only jobs available for expatriate women were school
teaching, so I joined at an international school as Physics teacher for IGCSE
curriculum. That experience solidifies my understanding of basic Physics
principles and tutoring skills to students of diverse background and
nationality. Teaching and explaining in a foreign language was a new and
challenging experience.
Recently I started working as Project coordinator
for a general contracting company that deals in Construction, finishing,
maintenance and even demolition of buildings, which rekindle the spark in me to
further study civil engineering field. Based on my diverse experience and flexibility,
as Aalto university offers to choose different courses from different specializations,
this program is a very suitable match. I’m wishing to opt courses both from
construction management and building performance. Upon completion of master’s
in science, I would have thorough understanding of both management and
technological aspect of leading a building project. The program’s focus on
sustainable construction and cutting-edge technologies resonates with my goal
of contributing to the development of resilient and eco-friendly
infrastructure.
Beyond academics and professional experiences, I
bring a proactive and collaborative spirit to every endeavor. Thank you for
considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of contributing
to and learning from the dynamic academic community at Aalto University.
Yours sincerely,
Zahra Sultan
